The Musicology Department’s renowned faculty of scholars and educators address music from around the globe, paying particular attention to the sounds of the Caribbean, the Americas, and Western Europe. Collectively, their research and teaching explore how making, distributing, and experiencing music reflect and shape individual and group identities and values. Located at the crossroads of the Americas, Miami is the perfect setting for research on these and a vast array of other topics.

The Frost School of Music's musicology master's degree program is highly selective, and we pride ourselves on providing individualized attention and mentoring for each student. The Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library, a beautiful facility with an excellent collection, is committed to supporting research at all levels. A number of special collections across the University of Miami complement the library’s holdings and provide unique opportunities for student research.

Graduate Musicology Forum

Each Friday our department hosts the Graduate Musicology Forum, a gathering of our scholarly community. Here we provide a supportive environment in which students and faculty can present their work, hear lectures by distinguished visiting scholars, and share practical insights on the profession. In addition, many of our students also choose to enhance their academic experiences by engaging in performance opportunities in the Frost School of Music. We also encourage our students to venture beyond campus, to explore Miami’s vibrant music cultures. Many of our graduates enter doctoral programs of distinction and feel well-prepared for that experience after receiving their training at the Frost School of Music.
